Replace a tyre if the tread is near 1.6 mm, if you see bulges, deep cuts or exposed cords, or if the rubber is badly cracked with age. Tread wear indicators - small raised bars in the grooves - show when you reach the legal limit. If in doubt, we can check them for you.
Put a 20p coin into the main grooves. If you can see the outer band of the coin, the tread may be close to the 1.6 mm legal limit and should be checked properly. Do this at several points around each tyre, as wear is not always even.
Yes. Tyres below 1.6 mm tread, or with cuts, bulges, exposed cords or the wrong size or load rating, will fail the MOT. Having them inspected before the test gives you time to replace them at your convenience rather than in a rush.
