Wheel balancing spreads weight evenly around the wheel and tyre so it spins smoothly. An unbalanced wheel makes the steering wheel or seat shake, usually between 50 and 70 mph, and wears tyres and suspension parts faster. We balance wheels on our van using a precision balancer and small weights on the rim.
Spinning each wheel on a balancing machine to find heavy spots, then fitting small weights to the rim so the weight is even all the way round. It is different from wheel alignment, which sets the angles of the wheels.

The most common cause is an unbalanced wheel, especially if the shake appears between about 50 and 70 mph. Other causes include a damaged tyre, a bent wheel or worn steering parts. Shaking only when braking usually points to warped brake discs. We can check the wheels and tyres first.
Every time a new tyre is fitted, and whenever you notice vibration. It is also worth checking after hitting a deep pothole or kerb, as a lost weight or knock can throw the balance out. We balance every new tyre we fit as standard.
No. Balancing evens out the weight around each wheel to stop vibration. Alignment sets the angles of the wheels so the car drives straight and tyres wear evenly. If your car pulls to one side or a tyre wears on one edge, that points to alignment.
