Getting a flat tyre is never convenient. It usually happens when you’re on your way to something important or just trying to get through a busy day. The traditional solution involves a tow truck or a risky drive to the nearest garage, costing you time and money. But what if the garage could come to you? That’s where Mobile Tyres Services in.
The Mobile Tyre Fitting Process
Mobile tyre fitting isn’t just about swapping out a rubber ring; it’s a complete service performed by a trained technician with a fully equipped van. The process is streamlined to get you back on the road safely and quickly. Here’s how it typically works.
Step 1: Making the Call and Providing Details
Your first step is to contact a mobile tyre fitting service. You can do this online or by phone. To make the process as efficient as possible, you’ll need to provide some key information:
- Your Location: Be precise. Give a clear address, postcode, or even a landmark if you’re stranded.
- Your Tyre Size: This is the most crucial detail. You can find it on the sidewall of your existing tyre. It will look something like “205/55 R16 91V”. Getting this right ensures the technician brings the correct replacement.
- The Problem: Is it a simple flat? A slow puncture? Or are you just due for a replacement? This helps the technician prepare.
- Vehicle Details: The make, model, and year of your vehicle can help confirm the tyre specifications.
Step 2: The Technician Arrives
A specialized van, essentially a workshop on wheels, will arrive at your location. These vans are kitted out with everything needed to perform a full tyre change, including:
- A tyre-changing machine
- A wheel-balancing machine
- Pneumatic wrenches and hand tools
- A new tyre (or tyres) and valve
- Jacks and safety stands
The technician will first assess the situation and confirm the work to be done. Safety is the top priority, so they will secure the vehicle before starting any work.
Step 3: Removing the Old Tyre
This is where the real work begins. The technician will:
- Loosen the Lug Nuts: Using a wrench, they’ll loosen the lug nuts on the wheel before lifting the vehicle.
- Lift the Vehicle: A hydraulic jack is used to lift the corner of the car with the damaged tyre. For safety, an axle stand is placed under the vehicle as a backup.
- Remove the Wheel: Once the car is securely lifted, the technician will fully remove the lug nuts and take the wheel off the vehicle.
Step 4: Fitting the New Tyre
With the wheel off the car, it’s moved to the tyre-changing machine inside the van.
- Deflate and Break the Bead: The old tyre is fully deflated. Then, the machine is used to break the “bead”: the seal between the tyre and the wheel rim.
- Remove the Old Tyre: The machine’s arm lifts the old tyre off the rim.
- Inspect the Rim: The technician will inspect the wheel rim for any damage, corrosion, or cracks that could affect the new tyre’s seal. This is an important check that prevents future leaks.
- Install the New Tyre: The new tyre is lubricated and carefully mounted onto the rim using the same machine. A new valve is almost always fitted at this stage. It’s a small part, but a worn-out valve is a common source of slow punctures.
- Inflate to Correct Pressure: The new tyre is inflated to the manufacturer’s recommended pressure. You can find this information in your vehicle’s handbook or on a sticker inside the driver’s door jamb.
Step 5: Wheel Balancing
This is a step you can’t skip. An unbalanced wheel can cause vibrations at higher speeds (typically over 40-50 mph), leading to uneven tyre wear and potential damage to your vehicle’s suspension.
The technician will place the newly-fitted wheel onto the computerized wheel balancer in the van. The machine spins the wheel to detect any weight imbalances and indicates where small counterweights need to be attached to the rim. The result? A smooth, vibration-free ride.
Step 6: Re-fitting the Wheel and Final Checks
The balanced wheel is now ready to go back on your car.
- The technician will mount the wheel and hand-tighten the lug nuts.
- The vehicle is then lowered until the tyre just touches the ground, allowing the lug nuts to be tightened to the correct torque setting with a torque wrench. Over-tightening can damage the wheel studs, while under-tightening is a serious safety risk.
- Once torqued, the vehicle is fully lowered, and the jack and stands are removed.
- The technician will typically take the old, worn-out tyre away for responsible disposal.
And that’s it. You’re ready to drive away.
How Long Does Mobile Tyre Fitting Take?
Time is often the biggest concern. You’re busy, and you need to know how long you’ll be waiting. Let’s break it down.
Booking to Arrival
This is the most variable part. If you’re in a major urban area, you might get a technician in as little as 30-60 minutes. In more rural locations, it could be 90 minutes or more. When you book, you’ll be given a realistic ETA.
The Fitting Process (Per Tyre)
Once the technician arrives, the actual work is surprisingly fast. For a single tyre replacement, you can expect the job to take approximately 20-30 minutes. This includes jacking up the car, removing the old tyre, fitting the new one, balancing the wheel, and putting it all back together.
Multiple Tyres
If you’re replacing all four tyres, the process is still very efficient. It won’t take four times as long. A full set of four tyres can typically be fitted and balanced in about 60-75 minutes.
Best Practices for a Smooth Experience
To get the most out of a mobile tyre fitting service, a little preparation goes a long way. Think of it this way: Better prep = Faster service.
Know Your Tyre Size
We can’t stress this enough. Double-check the numbers on your tyre’s sidewall before you call. An incorrect size means a wasted trip for the technician and a longer wait for you.
Find Your Locking Wheel Nut Key
Many modern cars are fitted with one locking lug nut on each wheel to prevent theft. You’ll need the special key or adapter to remove it. Check your glove box, boot, or tool kit for it before the technician arrives. Forgetting this is one of the most common delays, as a technician can’t proceed without it.
Provide a Safe, Accessible Space
If you’re at home or work, park the car somewhere with enough space for the technician to work around it: ideally on a flat, stable surface. A driveway is perfect. If you’re on the road, pull over as far as you safely can and put your hazard lights on.
Be Clear About Your Needs
Are you looking for a budget tyre to get you by, or do you want a premium brand that matches your other tyres? Be specific when you book. Most services offer a range of options, from budget to mid-range and premium brands.
Ask About Disposal
Confirm that the service includes the disposal of your old tyre. Reputable companies will handle this for you, ensuring it’s recycled in an environmentally friendly way. Fees for this are standard, so don’t be surprised if there is a small charge.
Is Mobile Tyre Fitting More Expensive?
This is a common question. The assumption is that a convenience service must come with a premium price tag. But that’s not always the case.
Mobile fitting services have lower overheads than traditional garages: no expensive showroom, large waiting area, or prime high-street rent. These savings are often passed on to the customer. Research shows that mobile tyre fitting prices are highly competitive, and in many cases, they can be cheaper than the national fast-fit chains.
Plus, when you factor in the hidden costs of a garage visit: fuel to get there, time off work, or the cost of a tow: mobile fitting often comes out as the more economical choice.
Final Thoughts
Mobile tyre fitting has changed the game for drivers. It turns a stressful, disruptive event into a manageable inconvenience. The process is professional, efficient, and surprisingly quick, with a single tyre change often completed in under 30 minutes.
