Replacing a tyre is one of those unavoidable costs of owning a car in the UK. Whether it is a nail in the tread on the way to work, a blowout on the motorway, or simply a set of tyres that have worn down to the legal limit, at some point every driver needs to know what they are going to pay.
The honest answer is that tyre replacement cost in the UK varies considerably and if you go in without a clear picture of what is reasonable, it is easy to either overpay at a premium garage or undercut yourself with a budget tyre that costs more in the long run. This guide gives you a full, transparent breakdown of new tyre prices in the UK across every category, what fitting costs to expect, and how to make sure you are getting genuine value for your money.
Why Tyre Prices Vary So Much in the UK
Before getting into the numbers, it is worth understanding why two quotes for the same tyre size can differ by £80 or more. Several factors drive the variation:
Tyre brand and grade. This is the biggest single variable. A budget tyre and a premium tyre in the same size can differ by £100 or more per tyre and both are entirely legal and functional. The difference lies in performance: wet-weather braking distances, road noise, fuel efficiency, and longevity.
Tyre size. Larger wheels mean larger, more expensive tyres. A standard 15-inch tyre costs significantly less than a 20-inch performance tyre. Low-profile tyre; common on sports cars and higher-spec models, also carry a price premium due to the precision required in both manufacture and fitting.
Where you buy. High street tyre chains, independent garages, online retailers with fitting partners, and mobile tyre services all operate at different price points. Online purchasing with a fitting appointment is often the most cost-effective route for non-emergency replacements.
Supply and demand. Popular sizes, 205/55 R16, for example are produced in high volumes and are competitively priced. Specialist sizes for older or unusual vehicles can be harder to source and cost more accordingly.
Average Tyre Cost UK: What You Can Expect to Pay
Here is a practical guide to average tyre cost in the UK by grade, covering the most common tyre sizes. These prices reflect supply and fit, meaning the tyre cost plus standard fitting, at a typical UK tyre centre or mobile fitting service.
Budget Tyres
Budget tyres are manufactured by lesser-known brands: Radar, Hifly, Nankang, Runway, Torque and are produced to meet the minimum safety standards required for road use in the UK. They are a legitimate option for drivers covering low annual mileage in urban environments who prioritise cost over outright performance.
- Small car (185/65 R15): £45-£65 fitted
- Family hatchback (205/55 R16): £55-£75 fitted
- SUV / crossover (235/60 R18): £75-£100 fitted
- Performance / low-profile (245/35 R19): £90-£125 fitted
Mid-Range Tyres
Mid-range tyres represent the sweet spot for most UK drivers. Brands such as Hankook, Kumho, Falken, Nexen, and Vredestein offer noticeably better wet grip, quieter road noise, and longer tread life than budget options, often at prices only marginally higher.
- Small car (185/65 R15): £70-£95 fitted
- Family hatchback (205/55 R16): £85-£120 fitted
- SUV / crossover (235/60 R18): £115-£155 fitted
- Performance / low-profile (245/35 R19): £135-£185 fitted
Premium Tyres
Premium tyres from Michelin, Continental, Bridgestone, Pirelli, and Goodyear are the benchmark against which all others are measured. Independent testing by organisations such as TÜV and Auto Bild consistently shows measurable advantages in wet braking, aquaplaning resistance, and handling, differences that matter when you need to stop quickly in British weather. Most new cars are factory-fitted with premium tyres for this reason.
- Small car (185/65 R15): £100-£135 fitted
- Family hatchback (205/55 R16): £120-£175 fitted
- SUV / crossover (235/60 R18): £160-£235 fitted
- Performance / low-profile (245/35 R19): £195-£290+ fitted
Tyre Fitting Cost UK: What Is Included and What Is Not
When you see a tyre price advertised in the UK whether online or on a garage forecourt, it is important to understand exactly what that price covers. Tyre fitting cost in the UK can mean different things depending on the provider, and the final bill sometimes looks different from the headline figure.
What should always be included in a tyre fitting price:
- Removal of the old tyre from the rim
- Mounting and seating of the new tyre
- Wheel balancing, this is non-negotiable after every tyre replacement and should never be an optional extra
- Correct inflation to the vehicle manufacturer’s specified PSI
What is sometimes charged separately:
- Valve replacement: A new valve is recommended with every tyre replacement. Most reputable fitters include this, but some charge £2 to £5 extra. It is a small cost and worth doing.
- Tyre disposal: Your old tyre must be disposed of legally. Most garages include this at no extra cost, but check before agreeing to a quote.
- TPMS (Tyre Pressure Monitoring System) service: Many modern UK vehicles have TPMS sensors fitted inside the wheel. If the sensor requires recalibrating or a new service kit after tyre fitting, this can add £5 to £15 per wheel. It is a legitimate cost but worth confirming upfront.
- Wheel alignment: Not required with every tyre change, but if your vehicle has been pulling to one side, or if the tyres show uneven wear patterns, getting the wheel alignment checked at the same time makes sense. Expect to pay £30 to £60 for a two-wheel alignment and £50 to £100 for a full four-wheel alignment check.
New Tyres Price UK: How to Get the Best Deal
Understanding the market means you can shop confidently without being pressured into either an overpriced premium when you do not need it or a cut-price budget tyre that will not last.
Buy online, fit locally. Websites such as Blackcircles, Mytyres, and National Tyres Online allow you to browse and purchase tyres at competitive prices, then book a fitting appointment at a local garage or mobile fitter. This separation of tyre supply from fitting labour often delivers the best overall new tyres price in the UK.
Match your tyre to your driving. A high-mileage motorway driver covering 25,000 miles a year will genuinely benefit from the longer tread life and superior wet-weather performance of a premium tyre. A city driver covering 6,000 miles a year in mostly dry conditions may find a mid-range tyre delivers perfectly adequate performance at a fraction of the price.
Replace in pairs as a minimum. If one front tyre is worn, the matching tyre on the other side should be replaced at the same time to maintain balanced handling and braking. Fitting a brand new tyre on one side and leaving a worn tyre on the other creates an uneven grip profile that affects how the car behaves, particularly in wet conditions. Many fitters will offer a small discount when fitting two or four tyres in a single visit.
Check the tyre label. Since 2012, all tyres sold in the UK must display an EU tyre label showing ratings for fuel efficiency, wet grip, and external noise. When comparing tyres at a similar price point, these ratings give you an objective basis for comparison. Aim for at least a C rating for wet grip as a minimum on UK roads.
Do not wait until the tyre is illegal. The legal minimum tread depth in the UK is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre. Driving on worn tyres below this limit carries a £2,500 fine and three penalty points per tyre. However, most tyre safety experts and leading manufacturers recommend replacing tyres at 3mm, as wet braking distances increase sharply below this threshold. Replacing at 3mm rather than waiting until 1.6mm is a safe decision, not just a financial one.
When Is a Repair Cheaper Than Replacement?
Not every tyre problem requires a full replacement. A puncture caused by a nail or screw in the central tread area, away from the sidewall and shoulder, can often be safely repaired using a plug-and-patch method in line with British Standard BS AU 159. A professional tyre repair of this type typically costs £15 to £30 and is a legitimate, safe solution that many drivers overlook in favour of automatically assuming replacement is needed.
However, a tyre cannot be repaired if the damage is in the sidewall, if the tyre has been driven on while flat, if there is a blowout, or if there are multiple punctures. In these cases, replacement is the only safe option.

Final Word
Tyre replacement cost in the UK does not have to be a guessing game. Armed with a clear understanding of brand grades, size pricing, and what fitting should and should not include, you are in a strong position to get a fair deal whether you are booking a planned replacement at a local garage, ordering online, or calling a mobile fitter in an emergency.
Your tyres are the only part of your car that actually touches the road. They affect how quickly you stop, how confidently you corner, and how safely your vehicle handles in the wet. Spending appropriately on the right tyre for your driving is not an extravagance, it is one of the most sensible investments a UK driver can make.
