A call out tyre service typically costs between $50 and $150 for standard situations, covering labour and the call-out fee. Final pricing depends on your location, time of day, tyre type, and whether extra parts or roadside assistance are needed.
A flat tyre at the wrong time can turn a straightforward drive into a stressful situation. Knowing what a call out tyre service costs before you need one helps you avoid being overcharged when you’re stranded.
This post breaks down what drives the price, what hidden fees to watch for, and how to make sure you’re getting a fair deal.
What Affects Call Out Tyre Service Pricing?
Several factors push the price up or down. Location is usually the biggest one.
If you’re in a metro area, technicians can reach you quickly and charge less for travel. Rural or remote locations often carry a higher call-out fee — sometimes double the standard rate — because of drive time and fuel costs.
Other factors that affect your final bill include:
- Tyre type — run-flat tyres and low-profile tyres cost more to replace than standard tyres
- Vehicle type — SUVs, 4WDs, and vans require larger, pricier tyres
- Time of call — after-hours, weekend, and public holiday jobs typically carry a surcharge
- Parts needed — if you need a new tyre rather than a repair, expect to pay for the tyre itself on top of the service fee
A basic tyre repair (plugging a puncture) costs less than a full tyre replacement. Know which one you’re likely to need before you call.
Standard vs. Emergency Call Out Fees — What’s the Difference?
Standard call out fees apply during business hours, typically Monday to Friday, 7am–5pm. These usually sit between $50 and $80 and cover the technician’s travel and labour.
Emergency call out fees apply outside those hours. They can range from $100 to $200 or more, depending on the provider and your location. Some companies charge a flat emergency rate. Others bill by the hour, which adds up fast if the job takes longer than expected.
Ask whether the quote is all-inclusive or whether parts are billed separately. A $70 call-out fee sounds reasonable — until you realise the replacement tyre costs another $180 on top.
Hidden Costs to Watch Out For
Most providers are upfront about their base rates, but a few additional charges can catch you off guard.
Watch for:
- Disposal fees — some technicians charge $10–$20 to remove and dispose of your old tyre
- Valve replacement — often $10–$15 extra, sometimes not mentioned until the invoice
- Tyre balancing — necessary after a replacement, but not always included in the quoted price
- Minimum call-out distance — some providers set a minimum charge if you’re within a short radius of their depot, which can feel unfair on smaller jobs
Always ask for a written quote before the technician arrives. Verbal quotes are harder to dispute if the bill comes back higher.
How to Get a Fair Price for a Call Out Tyre Service
Getting a fair price isn’t complicated, but it does require a few minutes of preparation.
Step 1: Know your tyre specs. Check the sidewall of your tyre for the size (e.g., 225/45R17). This lets you ask for an accurate quote and compare prices between providers.
Step 2: Call at least two providers. Prices vary more than most people expect. A five-minute comparison call can save you $50 or more.
Step 3: Ask directly about surcharges. Confirm whether the quoted price includes GST (Goods and Services Tax), disposal, balancing, and any after-hours fees. Get it confirmed in writing if possible.
Step 4: Check if your roadside assistance covers it. If you’re a member of a roadside assistance program (like AAA in the US or RACQ in Australia), tyre services may be included or heavily discounted. Check your membership before you pay out of pocket.
Step 5: Review the invoice before you pay. Make sure every line item matches what you agreed to. If something unexpected appears, ask the technician to explain it before signing off.
What’s a Reasonable Price? Use This as a Benchmark
To summarise what fair pricing looks like across common scenarios:
| Service | Typical Cost Range |
|---|---|
| Standard puncture repair | $30–$60 |
| Standard call-out fee (business hours) | $50–$80 |
| Emergency call-out fee (after hours) | $100–$200+ |
| New tyre supply and fit (standard) | $120–$250 per tyre |
| Tyre balancing | $15–$30 per tyre |
These ranges reflect general market pricing and will vary by region. Use them as a starting point, not a fixed rule.
Know the Costs Before You’re Stuck on the Side of the Road
A call out tyre service is one of those expenses you never plan for — but you can plan around it. Understanding what’s included in a quote, what extra charges to expect, and how to compare providers puts you in a much stronger position when the time comes.
Keep your tyre specs noted somewhere accessible, confirm your roadside assistance coverage, and save two or three local tyre service numbers in your phone. A little preparation now means fewer surprises when it matters most.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a call out tyre service cost on average?
Most standard call out tyre services cost between $50 and $150 during business hours. Emergency or after-hours call outs can range from $100 to $200 or more, not including the cost of a replacement tyre if one is needed.
Is a tyre repair cheaper than a full replacement on a call out?
Yes. A puncture repair typically costs $30–$60, while supplying and fitting a new tyre adds $120–$250 per tyre depending on the size and brand. Always ask whether a repair is viable before agreeing to a replacement.
Do call out tyre services charge more on weekends?
Most do. Weekend, after-hours, and public holiday jobs usually carry a surcharge of $30–$80 on top of the standard call-out fee. Confirm the after-hours rate before booking.
What’s the difference between a call out fee and a tyre replacement fee?
The call-out fee covers the technician’s time and travel to reach you. The tyre replacement fee covers the cost of the new tyre and fitting. These are typically billed separately, so always ask for an all-inclusive quote.
Can roadside assistance cover a call out tyre service?
Often, yes. Roadside assistance memberships (such as AAA or state-based programs) frequently include tyre changes or can direct you to a preferred provider at a reduced rate. Check your membership details before paying for a private call out.
