Quick answer: If you break down on a UK motorway, call 999 if you’re in danger or blocking a live lane. For non-emergencies, call National Highways on 0300 123 5000. First, move left, exit the vehicle on the left side, and stand behind the barrier away from traffic.
Breaking down on a motorway is stressful. The vehicles are fast, the lanes are wide, and the margin for error is small. Knowing exactly what to do—and who to call—before it happens could save your life.
This guide walks you through every step: where to move your car, how to stay safe, who to contact, and what to avoid.
Should You Call 999 or National Highways (0300 123 5000)?
This depends on the situation.
Call 999 immediately if:
- You’re stuck in a live lane and cannot move
- Someone is injured
- Your vehicle is on fire
- You feel unsafe or threatened
Call National Highways on 0300 123 5000 if:
- You’ve reached a safe position (hard shoulder, emergency refuge area, or lay-by)
- No one is injured
- You need guidance or assistance on a non-emergency basis
National Highways manages England’s motorways and major A-roads. Their team can alert the relevant services and monitor your situation via CCTV.
Step 1 — Go Left: Getting Your Vehicle to Safety
The moment you sense a problem, signal left and move to the left-hand lane. Don’t stop suddenly in a live lane.
Where to stop, in order of preference:
- Emergency refuge area (ERA) — marked with an orange SOS phone symbol on smart motorways
- Hard shoulder — only available on traditional motorways; not present on all-lane running (ALR) smart motorways
- Lay-by — if you’re near one before breaking down completely
Turn on your hazard lights immediately. If you can, leave your sidelights on too—especially in poor visibility. According to the UK Highway Code (Rules 274–278), you must use hazard lights whenever your vehicle is stationary and poses a risk to other road users.
Step 2 — Get Safe: Exiting the Vehicle Correctly
Once stopped, do not stay in your vehicle.
Exit from the left-hand door only, keeping away from traffic. Move yourself and any passengers behind the barrier or up the bank—well clear of the carriageway. If there’s no barrier, move as far left as possible.
Leave pets in the vehicle unless there’s an immediate danger. Opening a door near a live lane puts both you and your pet at greater risk.
Do not stand behind your vehicle or near the road. Rear-end collisions on the hard shoulder are a leading cause of motorway fatalities.
Step 3 — Get Help: Using Emergency Phones or Your Mobile
Option 1: Roadside emergency phones Orange SOS phones are positioned every mile along UK motorways. They connect directly to National Highways’ control centre and automatically relay your exact location. No phone signal required.
Option 2: Your mobile If you have signal, call 0300 123 5000 (National Highways) or 999 if it’s an emergency. Look for a marker post (small blue signs with a number) to identify your location.
Option 3: eCall Many vehicles manufactured after March 2018 are fitted with eCall—an automatic emergency call system that activates on impact. Check your car manual to confirm if your vehicle has this feature.
How to Communicate Your Location to Emergency Services
Location is critical. Here’s how to pinpoint where you are:
- Marker posts: Small blue and white signs every 100 metres on the hard shoulder. Quote the number on the post when calling for help.
- Mapping apps: Open Google Maps or Apple Maps and share your GPS coordinates with the operator.
- Motorway junction signs: Note the last junction you passed—this narrows down your location significantly.
- eCall: If activated, this transmits your GPS location automatically to emergency services.
Calling Your Breakdown Recovery Provider
Once you’re safe and have contacted the emergency services (if needed), call your breakdown provider.
Major UK breakdown services and their numbers:
- AA: 0800 88 77 66
- RAC: 0333 2000 999
- Green Flag: 0800 400 600
- Direct Line: 0345 246 8704 (if included in your car insurance)
Have your membership number, vehicle registration, and location ready. Recovery times on motorways vary, but National Highways’ Traffic Officer patrols can reach you faster in many cases.
What if you break down in a live lane on a smart motorway?
Smart motorways with all-lane running have no permanent hard shoulder. If your vehicle stops in a lane and you cannot move it, stay in your vehicle with your seatbelt on and call 999. Overhead gantry signs should display a red X to close the lane, but this takes time. Keep your hazard lights on.
What if you’re a disabled driver?
National Highways offers a Motorway Incident Detection and Automatic Signalling (MIDAS) system that can detect stationary vehicles. If you have a disability that prevents you from exiting the vehicle safely, call 999 and explain your situation. You can also pre-register with your breakdown provider for priority assistance.
What if you break down at night or in bad weather?
Visibility is reduced. Keep hazard lights on and wear a high-visibility vest if you have one. Stay low, behind the barrier. Do not attempt repairs yourself in the dark on a motorway.
What NOT to Do When Broken Down on a Motorway
- Don’t attempt repairs on the hard shoulder or in a live lane
- Don’t stand between your vehicle and oncoming traffic
- Don’t use your vehicle’s warning triangle on a motorway—the Highway Code specifically advises against this
- Don’t re-enter the motorway on foot
- Don’t leave animals loose
- Don’t stay in your vehicle if it’s on the hard shoulder—it’s safer outside, behind the barrier
What to Keep in Your Car for Motorway Emergencies
Being prepared makes a difficult situation more manageable. Keep these items in your vehicle:
- High-visibility vest (one per passenger)
- Phone charger or power bank
- Breakdown provider membership card and number
- Torch
- Warm clothing and a blanket
- Water and a basic first aid kit
- Vehicle documents (insurance, breakdown cover details)
Stay Calm, Act Fast, Stay Left
A motorway breakdown is dangerous—but it’s survivable when you act correctly. Remember the National Highways three-step framework: Go Left. Get Safe. Get Help.
Move to a safe position, exit from the left side, get behind the barrier, and make your calls. That’s it. Everything else can wait.
Review your breakdown cover before your next long journey. If you don’t have a policy, now is the time to sort one.
Who do I call if I break down on a UK motorway?
Call 999 if you or anyone else is in immediate danger. For non-emergencies, call National Highways on 0300 123 5000. Then contact your breakdown provider (AA: 0800 88 77 66, RAC: 0333 2000 999, Green Flag: 0800 400 600).
Is it safe to stay in my car on the hard shoulder?
No. National Highways advises you to exit your vehicle from the left-hand door and stand behind the barrier, away from traffic. Vehicles on the hard shoulder are at significant risk of being struck from behind.
What should I do if I break down on a smart motorway with no hard shoulder?
If you can reach an emergency refuge area, do so immediately. If your vehicle stops in a live lane and cannot move, stay inside with your seatbelt on and call 999. Your hazard lights will alert other drivers and overhead sensors should detect your vehicle.
Can I use a warning triangle on a UK motorway?
No. The UK Highway Code specifically advises against placing a warning triangle on a motorway due to the high speeds and risk of injury while placing it.
How do I find my location on a motorway to tell emergency services?
Look for blue and white marker posts (placed every 100 metres on the hard shoulder), check your last known junction number, or use your phone’s GPS location on Google Maps or Apple Maps.
What if I don’t have breakdown cover?
Call National Highways on 0300 123 5000. They can arrange traffic officer assistance and direct you to recovery options. You will likely need to pay for recovery, but your safety is the priority.
